Brief History
Curam Leanaí na Dromoda opened in 2004. The building and staffing was funded initially through the EOCP (Equal Opportunities Childcare Programme). The facility is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and offers care from 4 months – 12 year olds. Care for primary school children is offered in the afternoons and Club Spraoi takes place every Thursday from 3 – 5 pm. The Naíonra offers preschool education every morning through the medium of Irish. There is an average of 30 children using the Childcare facility on a weekly basis.
Irish is the main language throughout the childcare facility.
Eilís Uí Shaircheallaigh is coordinator of the childcare.
Summer camps were run for the first time in July and August 2007 and are now an annual event.
When we opened we received funding in the form of staffing grants from Pobal under the Equal Opportunities Childcare Programme. This programme was funded by EU structural funds and ended 31st December 2007. On that date a new programme began, funded by the Irish exchequer and this programme kicked in on 1 June 08. This new programme, the National Childcare Investment Programme, seeks to target funding directly to disadvantaged parents. The programme was weighted heavily towards Community Childcare facilities in centres of population and those in rural areas will experience a significant decrease in funding. There is now a new program in place where there is CCS, CETS dnd ECCE funding in place.
