Forbairt na Dromoda Teo (Dromid Community Development) is a community social enterprise based in the South-West Kerry Iveragh Gaeltacht. This social enterprise was built in 2000, with the aim of providing employment locally, promoting the Irish language and the provision of necessary social services in an area that sees and deals with many challenges.
We are located in one of Ireland’s newest villages, Cillín Liath (Killeenleagh), which was established many years ago, with the foundation of a local primary school (Scoil Náisiúnta Cillín Liath) in 1973. Cillín Liath remained just this for many years, with the community having no access to community services for it’s community or it’s youth. Before long, a pub and shop were set up in the late 1980’s, soon to become a cornerstone for the Dromid community, acting as an essential outlet for many, while fostering engagement and involvement among the local community. Further development was in sight for this remote area, with the establishment of Our Lady of the Valley Church in 1990.This contemporary construction, being one of three churches in the Dromod Parish, replaced an older church in Mastergeehy, located west of Cillín Liath. With thriving advancements made in Cillín Liath, the local community decided to take it one step further and embark on a large-scale project, a remarkable proposal that at the time, seemed unimaginable.
Today, through the support of Údarás na Gaeltachta, stands Ionad na Dromoda in the center of Cillín Liath. This significant establishment is a hive of activity all year round, with numerous facilities supporting our local community.
Gteic@AnDromaid, a remote working facility and part of the Gaeltacht Digital Network, is located in the enterprise units. Broadband is available throughout the site, as well as ample parking and access for all types of vehicles. Staff at Ionad na Dromoda are always on hand to give administrative and practical support, and possess great local knowledge which will be invaluable to tenants based at Ionad na Dromoda.
Cúram Leanaí na Dromoda, a childcare facility, is also located in the complex, providing care to children through the medium of Irish. This valuable facility is located directly alongside our Gteic Hub, ideal for working parents with young children.
There is a skilled workforce readily available in Dromid, due to extensive IT training carried out at Ionad na Dromoda in recent years. There is a diligent team employed here at Forbairt na Dromoda, with unique skills and abilities, helping to offer the fantastic services that we do everyday. There are over 30 people employed onsite, from the community offices to the child care service, the hostel, the day-care centre, the RSS and CE schemes and the Gteic Hub. Together with our business units, Forbairt na Dromoda is constantly advancing as the community’s only social enterprise.
A hostel, which can house up to 30 people lies at the center of this vision and welcomes visitors from all four corners of the world. The community hall, which adjoins the hostel is continuously occupied, being the popular location for concerts, shows, group classes or events, this state-of-the art venue is forever in popular demand. 6 purpose built houses for the elderly and a social center are located adjacent to the hostel, providing a meals service and a social outlet for the elderly members of our community. A recycling center is also positioned on-site, presenting a necessary resource for the locality. One of our latest advancements here at Forbairt na Dromoda is a cancer care support car. This vital service relies on volunteer drivers to transport patients to and from their hospital appointments. This highly sought after act of assistance not only provides for the greater Dromid area, but supports the whole of the Iveragh Peninsula.
